In humans, it is linked to infection with one of the many Babesia species capable of infecting humans: B. microti (more common in the United States), B. duncani, B. divergens (more common in Europe), and B. venatorum. Causes and Natural herbals treatment for Babesiosis
Babesiosis is caused by single-celled microorganisms (protozoa) from the genus Babesia. These microorganisms are parasites that invade red blood cells (erythrocytes). There are more than 100 species of Babesia. In most cases, the two species of Babesia that cause disease in humans (pathogenic) are Babesia microti and Babesia divergens. The species involved varies depending upon specific geographic location.
The major cause of babesiosis in the northeastern United States is infection by B. microti. In California and Washington a new Babesia parasite, called WA-1, is believed to be responsible for the disorder. In Europe, B. divergens and B. bovis are usually responsible for babesiosis.
Babesia protozoa such as B. microti are transmitted to humans through the bite of infected ticks. The ticks serve as “vectors,” the term for any organism that is infected with and later transmits a particular disease agent (e.g., bacterium or virus) to another organism, which may then become infected. The deer tick (Ixodes dammini or scapularis) is the most common vector that transmits babesiosis. In extremely rare cases, babesiosis may be transmitted following a blood transfusion with blood that is contaminated with the microorganism.
Symptoms and Natural herbals treatment for Babesiosis
Symptoms of Babesia infection can appear few weeks after exposure, but it can also be several months after exposure. Some people may have mild to moderate symptoms such as body aches, chills, fatigue, fever, or weakness. Others may experience hemolytic anemia. This occurs when a person’s body cannot make red blood cells as fast as it destroys them. Hemolytic anemia can cause symptoms that include: jaundice, liver enlargement, severe activity intolerance, shortness of breath, spleen enlargement. Many cases of Babesia infections can be life-threatening. In these instances, symptoms may be Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), a severe blood clotting disorder, heart attack, inability to maintain blood pressure, kidney failure, liver failure, or respiratory distress
Certain individuals trusted Source may be more at risk of severe infection than others, including those without a spleen, older adults, those with an underlying condition, such as liver or kidney disease, anyone with a compromised immune system. In case a person experiences severe symptoms, they will require immediate medical attention or Natural herbals treatment for Babesiosis.
Transmission Mode: Natural herbals treatment for Babesiosis
The easier way of contracting Babesia is a bite from an infected tick. Babesia microti parasites live in the gut of the black-legged or deer tick (Ixodes scapularis). The tick attaches to the body of white-footed mice and other small mammals, transmitting the parasite to the rodents’ blood. After the tick has eaten its meal of the animal’s blood, it falls off and waits to be picked up by another animal. The white-tailed deer is a common carrier of the deer tick.
The deer itself isn’t infected. After falling off the deer, the tick will typically rest on a blade of grass, a low branch, or leaf litter. If you brush up against it, it can attach to your shoe, sock, or other pieces of clothing. The tick then climbs upward, seeking a patch of open skin. You probably won’t feel the tick bite, and you may not even see it. That’s because most human infections are spread during spring and summer by ticks in the nymph stage.
During this stage, the ticks are about the size and color of a poppy seed. Besides a tick bite, this infection can also pass via contaminated blood transfusions or transmission from an infected pregnant woman to her fetus. More rarely, it can also be transmitted through an organ transplant.
Medical Treatment : Natural herbals treatment for Babesiosis
Babesia is a parasite and won’t respond to antibiotics alone. Treatment requires antiparasitic drugs, such as those used for malaria. Atovaquone plus azithromycin is used to treat most mild to moderate cases and is usually taken for 7 to 10 days. An alternative regimen is a clindamycin plus quinine. When it is a severe disease the treatment usually consists of azithromycin given intravenously plus oral atovaquone or clindamycin given intravenously plus oral quinine. With severe illness, additional supportive measures may be taken, such as blood transfusions. Relapses can occur after treatment. If you have symptoms again, they must be re-treated. Some people, such as those with weakened immune systems, may need to be treated for longer initially to clear the infection.
Prevention methods: Natural herbals treatment for Babesiosis
Taking steps to prevent tick bites when outdoors can help avoid Babesia infections. Ways to do this include:
- Walking or hiking on cleared trails only: This helps to prevent brushing up against brush, overgrown grasses, and leaf piles where people find ticks.
- Wearing long socks, long pants, and tucked-in, long-sleeved t-shirts when outdoors: This minimizes the area a tick could bite.
- Wearing light-colored clothing: This choice helps make identifying ticks on the clothing easier.
- Carefully applying tick repellents to skin or clothing: Examples include permethrin and DEET-containing products. However, these are not always suitable for children.
A tick usually needs to remain on a person’s body for 36–48 hours trusted Source before it can transmit the B.microti parasite. For this reason, people should conduct frequent tick checks on their bodies once they have been outside.
