Venous thrombosis: Causes, Symptomes and Treatment

The Venous thrombosis, i.e. the formation of a blood clot in a vein, is a fairly frequent health problem whose seriousness is linked to its potential complications. Its prevention and treatment are based on the administration of specific medications and the systematic wearing of adapted support stockings. Today, the prevention of deep vein thrombosis in people exposed to this risk is a constant concern for health professionals, both in the city and in the hospital.

WHAT IS PHLEBITIS?

Phlebitis or thrombophlebitis is caused by the formation of a blood clot in a vein, partially or completely blocking the flow of blood. In 90% of cases, it affects the calf and thigh. When it involves a vein of large diameter, this disease is serious because of its complications, in particular pulmonary embolism, which can lead to death. It can occur spontaneously or as a result of prolonged immobilization, damage to the vein walls or a decrease in blood flow.

What causes it?

There are multiple factors that can lead to thrombosis.

Causes of arterial thrombosis
Arterial thrombosis can be triggered by an injury to the wall of an artery resulting in the formation of a clot in contact with the area of the damaged artery. This is what happens in atherosclerosis, which is often involved in:

heart attacks ;
strokes.

The cause is toxic substances either for the artery walls or for blood clotting:

tobacco ;
hormonal contraception.
Causes of venous thrombosis
Arterial venous thrombosis can be triggered by :

the injection of an intravenous medication ;
trauma
inflammation
a bacterial infection
varicose veins
Cancer;
an oral contraceptive.
Other causes are frequently found at the origin such as:

a period of time that slows down the circulation;
a repeated and prolonged sitting position such as that caused by air travel
an injury;
a long immobilization with a cast for example;
a surgical operation.
